About the artist

Born in 1951, in Oklahoma, Prairie Band Potawatomi artist, Mitch Battese starting painting before the age of 10. Long before he was aware of competitive artwork, his mother would enter his art in shows and competitions. Although Native artwork was not widely collected, Mitch continued to paint the things his family valued – wildlife, spirituality, and native culture.

Mitch attended the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico as a high school student. Later, at college he studied under Terry Saul, a noted Choctaw artist. He majored in fine arts and sociology with an emphasis in culture and ethnic studies and he graduated with a bachelors of Arts degree from Northeastern State University, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Mitch received his master’s degree from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1980.

Mitch continues to paint, design, enters art shows and competitions across the United States. He currently resides in Lawrence, Kansas.
